The new Michelin star winners have been announced - so which London restaurants were awarded coveted stars?

The 2022 Michelin guide has been released, with London adding to its impressive list of Michelin-starred restaurants in the new guide.

Five restaurants in the capital own three coveted stars, which puts them at the top of the tree when it comes to fine dining.

So which London restaurants have new Michelin stars this year, and which other restaurants in the capital have retained their stars for 2022?

What is the criteria for winning a Michelin star?

According to the official Michelin website, there is a five-step process in order to be awarded a star, and it is as follows:

  • Using quality products
  • Mastery of flavour and cooking techniques
  • Personality of the chef in the cuisine
  • Value for money
  • Consistency of food

Which restaurants in London have been awarded new Michelin stars in 2022?

The Clove Club, Shoreditch

Chef: Isaac McHale

The Clove Club has received a second Michelin star, having previously held one. It’s a unique, fine dining restaurant that is a described as “cutting edge” and “using ingredients that are often overlooked”.

The guide says: “Whether it’s hazelwood grilled red mullet with stuffed green pepper, or dry-aged Middlewhite pork with spicy rhubarb, [Isaac McHale’s] plates are imaginative and detailed, but never overcrowded or overly complicated. His food is a joy to eat.”

Ikoyi, St James’s

Ikoyi, like The Clove Club, is a new addition to the two-star list, having received a boost from one star.

Chef Jeremy Chan combines local UK produce with West African flavours to create “bold, balanced and inventive dishes full of controlled intensity and free of extraneous theatricals” according to the Michelin Guide.

Evelyn’s Table, Soho

Chef: Luke Selby

After receiving its first Michelin star, Evelyn’s Table was described as London’s “best kept culinary secret” by Tatler. Located in the beer cellar of The Blue Posts pub, it’s known for Modern European dishes and lesser known wines.

The Michelin Guide states: “Talented Head Chef Luke Selby and his younger brothers Nat and Theo explain each of the sophisticated, original dishes on the perfectly balanced set menu in detail; watch them confidently craft each course using a mix of French and Japanese techniques.”

Frog by Adam Handling, Covent Garden

Expect theatrical fine dining from this restaurant, which has bagged its first Michelin star. Chef and owner Adam Handling, who started out as an apprentice at the prestigious Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland, is known for using the finest local ingredients on a contemporary British menu.

Jamavar, Mayfair

Chef: Surender Mohan

Indian street food restaurant, Jamavar, which has a capacity of 108 guests seated, has won its first Michelin star in 2022. The Michelin Guide states: “Instead of starters there’s an extensive selection of ‘small plates’ that include succulent Malabar prawns – a very popular speciality, along with the robustly flavoured kid goat shami kebab.”

Kol, Marylebone

Chef: Santiago Lastra

A new addition to the guide, ‘Mexican soul, British ingredients’ is the tagline and niche of this restaurant. The waiting list is fairly long, with May reservations opening in early March.

The Michelin Guide says: “The inventive, talented kitchen team takes recipes rooted in tradition from various regions of Mexico to which they add their own creativity, while using top drawer produce from around the British Isles.”

Sollip, Southwark

Chef: Woongchul Park

Just a four-minute walk from the iconic Shard, this Korean-inspired fine-dining restaurant run by a husband and wife team has just received its first Michelin star.

The Michelin Guide describes Sollip’s food as “not showy or over complicated, just polished and poised” and praises the “cool, calm and contemporary” atmosphere.

Selling “interesting” wines in a retro yet modern setting, Trivet is run by alumni of the Fat Duck.

The Michelin Guide states: “The combinations of ingredients are perfectly balanced, flavours are assured and the execution is faultless. It’s a pleasure eating food of such clarity and confidence.”

Wild Honey St James

A new addition to the guide, Wild Honey was launched in Spring 2019, having enjoyed over a decade in Mayfair. The Michelin Guide praises Anthony Demetre’s cooking, saying: “It’s all about the flavours, not the frippery – so while his dishes might look quite simple on the plate, they really deliver in taste and thus reveal his considerable skills.”
