London election results 2024 live: Sadiq Khan beats Susan Hall in London mayoral vote

After turnout figures caused nerves among Labour Sadiq Khan has won the London mayoral election

London went to the polls on Thursday (May 2) to elect the mayor of London and members of the London Assembly, with Labour’s Sadiq Khan winning a third term.

Figures released on Friday night had suggested turnout was higher in Conservative parts of the city, leading to speculation among Tory ‘insiders’ that Susan Hall is in with a chance against Sadiq Khan. But the count on Saturday saw Mr Khan elected once again.

In total, 13 candidates are taking part in the mayoral election, which is being run for the first time on a ‘first past the post’ basis.

Voters also had the chance to elect members of the London Assembly, which scrutinises the mayor’s work. Each person could cast two votes for assembly members - one for a candidate in one of 14 constituencies and one for a London-wide representative, of which there are 11 in total.

During the term just ending, there were 11 Labour assembly members, as well as nine Conservatives, three Greens and two Liberal Democrats.

We will bring live updates from the counts.

Key Events

  • Labour's Sadiq Khan has been elected as mayor of London for a third term
  • Low turnout in Labour areas - and high turnout where Tories have support

'Strategic' voting might help Sadi Khan in mayoral and Lib Dems for Assembly members

One Islington Liberal Democrat, at the Copper Box count for the North East - made up of Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest - said: "On the doorstep, the conversations we were having, people were very keen that there wasn't a Conservative mayor, and that they were voting outside their allegiance for a Labour mayor because they were so concerned about a Conservative mayor.

"And then the other votes [for London Assembly Members] might go to their party of conviction - the party they felt emotionally and politically attached to. But they were being a bit strategic about the mayoral part. So I think we'll see different behaviour on different sections of the vote here.”

Labour gained a councillor in the Brentford West ward after a tight contest. There were worries that independent candidate Theo Dennison could have an outside chance of snatching the by-election from the Labour Party.

However, he was defeated by Emma Yates who returned the seat to Labour after its previous incumbent Lara Parizotto quit the party and became an independent in October due to its position on the Israel-Palestine conflict. She triggered a by-election after she stepped down from being a councillor in March.

Ms Yates achieved a slim majority over Mr Dennison, beating him by fewer than 200 votes. A vocal critic of the council, Mr Dennison has blasted the Labour administration as “corrupt” and said that the closure of Brentford’s Watermans Art Centre was “symptomatic of the neglect of Brentford, the secrecy of the council, and its ineptitude.”

However, his strong rhetoric was not enough to sway voters who chose to return the seat to Labour. In contrast to her rival Ms Yates, who works as an assistant to Seema Malhotra the MP for Feltham and Heston, has previously told the Local Democracy Reporting Service she is “proud of our record as a Labour administration”.

Susan Hall congratulates Sadiq Khan on his win

Tory mayoral candidate Susan Hall congratulated Sadiq Khan on winning the mayoral race.

In her speech at City Hall Ms Hall said: "Spending a year campaigning for this election has been an honour and a privilege.

"I have loved speaking to Londoners about the things that matter to them. The thing that matters the most and to me is reforming the Met and making London safe again.

"I hope Sadiq makes this his top priority. “

Ms Hall jibes at Mr Khan saying; “he owes it to the families of those 1,000 people who have lost lives to knife crime under his mayoralty. I hope too that he stops patronising people like me who care.

"This isn't an episode of the Wire. This is real life on his watch. I will continue to hold Sadiq to account to stand up for the hard working families, to motorists and to women.

"I love London and I urge Sadiq to try harder to make it better for all our sakes."
