Bonfire Night is used to celebrate the anniversary of a failed gunpowder plot that took place in 1605

With autumn in full swing, and the days getting colder, that means only one thing - bonfire night is just around the corner. Bonfire night, also referred to as Guy Fawkes night, falls on November 5 each year because it’s the anniversary of a failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

Back in 1605, Guy Fawkes was part of a gunpowder plot. He wanted to blow up King James I and his government. Fawkes, along with others who wanted England to become Catholic, put 36 barrels of gunpowder in cellars underneath the Houses of Parliament in London, ready to set off a massive explosion.

However, the plan failed as one of Fawkes’ members sent a letter to someone in parliament telling him to stay away on November 5, with the letter making its way to the king. As we get ready to celebrate the failed plot once again, here are the best firework displays in London on bonfire night 2022.

One of the best displays taking place in the capital is the Alexandra Palace Fireworks Festival. It has been labelled as the ‘Glastonbury of fireworks’, and has live bands, film screenings and more.

Another popular display is the Danson Park Fireworks. This is one for the family as you can Enjoy a large variety of food and drink, ride the funfair, enjoy the live acts and more.
