London under a series of flood warnings as wild weather set to continue in the UK

The United Kingdom is preparing for potential flooding around the country as weather conditions continue to worsen. London had already suffered a spell of flash flooding last week and the Government’s official website has issued 18 warnings for the city alone.

The Met Office is predicting a largely wet day tomorrow beginning with heavy downpours from the early hours and rain expected to stick around for the majority of the day and night. A spokesperson for the national weather service said there is "a risk of scattered blustery and potentially thundery showers, these probably merging to a longer spell of rain later".

The government’s official advice for areas under a flood warning is to “be prepared” by getting a bag ready that includes medicines and insurance documents alongside continued checking for flood warning updates. The capital is currently at the lowest of a three tier warning system which can escalate to the highest  Act or Survive emergency alerts.

In the event of an evacuation, official advice for London residents includes creating a checklist of things to do to protect your family. That advice includes knowing how to turn off electricity, mains water and gas to prevent a fire and how to reduce flood damage when returning to a property.

In areas prone to flooding, the government advises homeowners to take steps such as laying tiles instead of carpets, moving electrical sockets higher up the wall and fitting non-return valves to stop flood water entering your property through the drains. They also advise residents to have insurance to protect their home or business.

If you have buildings and contents insurance, check if flood damage is included or if you rent your home, it’s your responsibility to protect your belongings.
