Arsenal could lose out on midfield sensation to arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur once the summer transfer window opens

Arsenal could miss out on a former priority transfer target, Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly ‘gravitating’ towards the Toffees star.

The Gunners have a new striker, new left-back and new midfielder on their summer 2024 wish-list and the 22-year-old Belgian international had been the number one option to fill the latter role. However, as the Emirates club begin to turn their attentions towards Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, it would appear Spurs have swooped in on the Senegalese-born footballer.

According to journalist Ignazio Genuardi, via SportWitness, the Gunners remain ‘strongly interested’ in the Belgian midfielder who was set to replace the reportedly departing Thomas Partey, but the club could be facing familiar competition for his signature.

Onana has supposedly been hopeful of moving away from Goodison Park for several months, with reports across Europe suggesting he has picked up interest from Spain, Germany and within top Premier League clubs.

Onana has been toying with a move away from Everton for months, with reports across Europe indicating he has suitors in Spain, Germany and England. The midfielder, who has a top speed of 36.65km/h, has also been adding to the growing speculation by recently confessing that he is intending to use the upcoming European Championship as a way to further demonstrate his skills to the interested parties.

Everton have previously stated that they would only be willing to let their star midfielder go for somewhere between £50-60m and there is currently little indication from either the Gunners or Spurs as to whether they would be willing to pay such a price.

Neither are set to feel any repercussions from Financial Fair Play regulations - unlike Onana’s current side who are hopeful of securing a big sale before the end of June deadline. However, as both north London clubs are also keen to bolster their squads in other departments, it remains to be seen if they will be disposed to offer the required funds.

Onana joined Everton in 2022 for a reported fee of £33m (plus add-ons) from Lille. He has since gone on to make 63 Premier League appearances for the club, helping them to avoid relegation in both the previous two campaigns, and is now looking to add to his 13 Belgium caps when he heads to Germany for the impending Euros 2024.
