Three Chelsea players could leave in January as Mauricio Pochettino looks to trim down his squad

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has built a reputation for clearing out players that he deems to be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge. During the summer window, the Argentinian coach sold over £200m worth of talent as the likes of Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly and many more all left the club.

Pochettino is keen to set high standards at the club and drive the Blues back into the European places where they have historically been for most of the last two decades. The size of Chelsea’s squad was seen as a key reason for their shortcomings in the previous campaign and club captain Thiago Silva was even quoted as saying that the dressing room was too small to fit all the players in.

Pochettino has worked actively to rectify this problem since his arrival and his Blues rebuild is expected to continue in the winter window. Three players at risk of leaving the club are expected to be Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Cucurella and Malang Sarr, according to reports from The Express. Chalobah is the longest serving Chelsea player of the list and he has been on the books since way back in 2007 when he arrived as an eight-year-old.

The defender progressed into the first team setup in 2021 after a series of loan spells at Ipswich, Huddersfield and Lorient. Chalobah broke into the starting lineup at Stamford Bridge under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel and the German remains an admirer of his former player. So much so that Chalobah has been touted as a potential target for German champions Bayern Munich.

The 24-year-old is yet to make a first team appearance under the new regime and he may see the move to Bayern as the perfect opportunity to realise his dream of becoming an England international. Malang Sarr is another name who appears to be destined for a Chelsea exit. When interviewed about Sarr’s future, Pochettino seemed to have no idea who the player was.

Sarr was left out of the Premier League squad at the start of the season and has made just eight league appearances since arriving from Lille in 2020. Another player facing an uncertain future is former Brighton man Marc Cucurella. Unlike the other two players, Cucurella has featured in the Premier League and has featured in a combined total of four games in all competitions.

The left back was seen as an exciting addition when he arrived from the South Coast in the summer of 2022 and the Spainard had even made an appearance for the international team. However, his hopes of making the Euro 2024 squad have decreased in recent months and he was far from his best last season.

Cucurella was heavily linked with a Man Utd move at the end of the summer window and it remains to be seen whether The Red Devils will come back with a bid after their recent defensive struggles. Chelsea’s other left back choices are Ben Chilwell, Levi Colwill and Ian Maatsen, who are all believed to be on lower wages than Cucurella.
