Frank Lampard has confirmed bad news about two his star players.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has confirmed both Reece James and Mason Mount will not kick a ball again this season due to injuries picked up in the game against Real Madrid.

Reece James picked up a hamstring injury and carried on playing despite the pain. He will now sit out the remainder of the campaign.

The loss of the full-back is another blow to caretake boss Frank Lampard who has been drafted in to steer the team to the highest possible finish after the sacking of Graham Potter.

Fellow England international Mason Mount will also be on the treatment table after picking up a complicated hip injury that has hampered his overall capacity and performance this season.

Another player who will not be involved against Brentford on Wednesday will be forward Kai Havertz who Lampard says will be able to return at some point in the season.

The Chelsea boss told the press ahead of Brentford: “Reece is unavailable, probably for the season. Mason’s the same. Reece has a hamstring. Mason’s carrying a pelvic injury... He’s been trying, but will have minor surgery [and] a four-week recovery.”

The situation of Mason Mount in particular will be of concern to Chelsea fans, with contract talks with the midfielder hitting a wall so far and clubs including Liverpool and Arsenal hovering around.

There is a chance Mount has kicked his last ball for the club, having turned down all the contract offers presented to him by the new Chelsea board.
