Premier League legends Rio Ferdinand and Martin Keown launched a staunch defence of Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic after he came under fire for not stopping the Arsenal opener at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

It took the Gunners just four minutes to take the lead against the Blues as Mikel Arteta's men got off to their trademark electric start. Declan Rice powered through the centre of the park before slotting a pass down the flank for Leandro Trossard.

The Belgian fired home with aplomb as he tucked the ball into the near post, leaving some questioning whether Petrovic should have done better. Commentator Ally McCoist led the calls as he criticised the shot-stopper for being beaten right under his nose.

However, at half-time, former Manchester United star Ferdinand and Arsenal hero Keown were quick to disagree with the Scotsman in the gantry and defend the 24-year-old Blues goalkeeper on TNT Sports.

Ferdinand said: "I didn't agree with the guys in commentary. I didn't think the goalkeeper could do much there. It was too quick.”

Meanwhile, Keown added: "It's a young defender [Alfie Gilcrhist], we know it's his first start in a Chelsea shirt but he gets turned inside out there. There's a lot of power, strength on that ball.

"I'm never happy with my goalkeeper letting it in at the near post but nevertheless, the speed it comes at him, I don't think he can react there."

Petrovic signed for Chelsea from New England Revolution in August last year, with the London club paying around £12.5 million for his services. The Serbia international has made 17 Premier League appearances for Chelsea this season, cementing his role in the starting XI in December. The Chelsea defence have only kept one clean sheet in their last 11 league outings.
