Chelsea and Newcastle United are two of six Premier League clubs facing an ‘unofficial Transfer Deadline Day’.

Chelsea are one of six Premier League clubs that are in a race to sell key players before the end of June in order to comply with the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Sky Sports broke the news on Thursday with Everton, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Leicester City also in the same situation. The six top flight clubs must make money back through sales before June 30 in order to meet the £105 million allowable loss stipulation.

Sky Sports has branded the effect as an 'unofficial Transfer Deadline Day' as the clock ticks on towards June 30, which marks the end of the accounting period for the league each season. Premier League clubs will be wary of meeting requirements with the league cracking down on breaches over the past season.

Both Everton and Nottingham Forest, two clubs needing to sell, have been handed points deductions in recent months. Any failure by Chelsea to meet the £105 million loss target could result in a similar punishment at Stamford Bridge.

That figure varies from league to league in the UK. In the Championship, the allowable loss is just £39 million while League One and League Two operate on a different model.

The 'losses' that go towards that £105 million figure excludes some key parts of football club running such as the upkeep of a stadium, building a new ground, academy spending and investment in the women's team. Anything defined as happening ‘for the general interest of the club and football’ are left out.

Selling players is a surefire way to help abide by the financial guidelines and limited negotiating time could see those six clubs forced to accept lower fees than wanted. Homegrown players could prove the most ludicrous with profit from academy products the biggest boost to balancing books.

At Chelsea, homegrown talents Conor Gallagher and Ian Matsen have both been linked with moves away and could be two deals pushed through before the end of June. Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are two clubs said to be in talks for a £50m deal for Gallagher while Maatsen has been linked with a £35 million permanent move to Borussia Dortmund.
