Levi Colwill says Chelsea fans will fall in love with 22-year-old once ‘it clicks’ after Brighton heroics

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill says he’s happy to play anywhere to help Chelsea win games as the debate continues about where manager Mauricio Pochettino should be deploying him.

The 20-year-old is yet to start a game at centre-half in the league, despite impressing there on loan at Brighton, leading to manager Roberto De Zerbi publicly asking Chelsea to include him in the deal for Moises Caicedo in the summer.

No defender in his age range uses the ball as quickly and effectively as Colwill and he’s beginning to knock on the England door after being named in the squad for the last international games.

He admits he just blocks out the noise and discussion about his best position and is fixed only on playing games to improve.

He told LondonWorld: “The thing is I will play anywhere the gaffer wants me to help the team. I played central today but to be honest, I’m happy to play anywhere.”

Chelsea returned to winning ways after coming into the game against Brighton at the back of back-to-back home defeats in the league. Advanced technology has shown Chelsea were moving in the right direction in all aspects of the game but the goals were just not coming.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side is the youngest team in the league with an average age of 23.5 years and even that has been significantly inflated by the age of veteran defender Thiago Silva who is 39.

The lack of goals has been undermining their efforts so far but Nicolas Jackson’s strike earned them a deserved win, bought them time and sealed progression to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Levi Colwill who himself enjoyed a good game admitted it’s only a matter of time before the Senegal international is scoring every week.

He added: “Yes definitely. It doesn’t matter what everyone is saying and you just can’t listen to the noise. You just go out on the pitch and do your job.

“He went out there today and got a goal and created chances. When it all clicks, how many goals will he score for us? I know it will be a lot. I am so happy for him. Hopefully he can take it on.”

The Blues are beginning to get players back even though they were knocked back by what looked like a hamstring injury to Ben Chilwell last night. Colwill admitted it was also refreshing to see Armando Broja get more minutes again.“It's been tough for him and a long journey he’s my mate and so I talk to him so I know what he’s been through so we are all just happy that he is back with us now,” Colwill concluded.
