A summer transfer story from 12 months ago has new life following the end of the Premier League season.

Fulham are on the verge of losing midfielder marauder Joao Palhinha to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich this summer, one year after a move to Germany collapsed for the player.

The 28-year-old was set to complete a £58 million move to Bayern Munich last summer but the deal collapsed on transfer Deadline Day last year. Palhinha knuckled down and turned in an incredibly impressive season at Fulham despite that blow, making 39 appearances in all competitions at the heart of the side's midfield.

Contracted until 2028 having joined the club from Sporting CP in 2022, Fulham supporters had hoped the dominant player had calmed ideas of a move away but it now appears that the club will lose Palhinha this summer. It comes as a blow with fellow first team star Tosin Adarabioyo having just completed a switch to London rivals Chelsea following the expiry of his contract.

Picking up on a Sky Sports report of a €45 million (£38 million) fee, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano took to X and wrote: "Bayern have reached an agreement on personal terms with João Palhinha!

"Contract ready, salary agreed and green light from the player who really wants to make it happen. Club to club talks to follow around €45m fee, as @Plettigoal @SkySportDe report. Getting closer."

Fulham boss Marco Silva had readily praised Palhinha over the season. Speaking in October, shortly after his initial move to Bayern collapsed and following a draw with Brighton, the Cottagers head coach said: "He leads through his attitude, he's not the most vocal guy and he's improving his English as well. I want him to be more vocal and in that position it's important.

"His attitude, his commitment, the way he leads the others around are things that are hard to find in football. In moments (when) we lose the ball, his reaction is impressive and we want to take the best from him and in other moments we want him to keep improving.

"We won the ball in a high area and our players took the right decisions. Then, the finish from Joao was great."
