Tottenham could be set for a massive fight to hold on to one of their best players this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur’s star defender Cristian Romero has found himself at the centre of a high-profile transfer saga linking him to Real Madrid this summer. Romero has been one of the top players for Spurs under manager Ange Postecoglou, showcasing his defensive prowess and helping Spurs secure Europa League football after a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League.

Since he joined Spurs from Atalanta in August 2021 for £42.5million, Romero has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Real Madrid, having lost Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane in recent years, manager Carlo Ancelotti has identified the Argentinian World Cup winner as a key target this summer. Tottenham’s management, led by chairman Daniel Levy, is determined to keep hold of their prized asset. According to Football.London, Spurs have already entered into negotiations to offer Romero an improved contract to fend off interest from Madrid.

Real Madrid, who have just won their 15th Champions League trophy, are known for their ability to attract top talent in Europe and South Africa. With Nacho Fernandez expected to leave the Santiago Bernabeu, Real could be in the market for a new centre-back, Romero could be the answer to a question they’ve struggled with since Ramos left the club.

Tottenham manager Postecoglou is likely to resist any attempts to poach Romero, especially after praising him following the defeat to Arsenal in April. Postecoglou said of his World Cup winner: “He was outstanding. He's a World Cup winner and I've just got to get some of what's in him into some of the others."

Last season, Romero played 33 games, scored five goals, and was ever-present as Spurs found form, faded, and recovered to secure European football under Postecoglou.
